They selected October because public schools are in session and existing traditions, such as Coming Out Day (October 11), occur that month.\u00a0 The month has been recognized and supported on a national level by GLAAD, HRC, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, and other national agencies.<\/li><li><strong>Be The Change Day \/ Non-Violence Day<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Celebrated on the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalresearch.ca\/october-2-nonviolence-day-gandhis-birthday-the-story-of-my-experiments-with-truth\/5549281\" target=\"_blank\">birthday of Mahatma Gandhi<\/a>.<\/li><li><strong>Ada Lovelace Day<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 held on the second Tuesday in October, this day celebrates the accomplishments of women in STEM, to increase the profile of women in STEM fields, and to encourage girls to explore STEM careers.\u00a0\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/findingada.com\/shop\/a-passion-for-science-stories-of-discovery-and-invention\/ada-lovelace-victorian-computing-visionary\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lovelace\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0visionary contributions to computer science went unrecognized for more than a century.<\/li><li><strong>National Coming Out Day<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Started in 1988, this day is celebrated annually on October 11th, the anniversary of\u00a0National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights (1987).<\/li><li><strong>Freethought Day<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0On October 12, 1692, the governor of what is now Massachusetts declared that \u201cspectral evidence\u201d would no longer be admissible as court evidence.\u00a0With a stroke his pen, nearly every charge was dropped against the accused \u201cwitches,\u201d and many were pardoned. This marked the end of the Salem witch trials.\u00a0 Freethought day is about the separation of church and state, freedom from faith-biased prosecution and discrimination, and being visible in the community to alleviate mystery and misunderstanding about non-theism.\u00a0 This is sometimes referred to as \u201cFreethought Coming Out Day\u201d.<\/li><li><strong>Astronomy Day<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013\u00a0In 2018, the dates are April 21st and October 13th.\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astroleague.org\/al\/astroday\/astrodayform.html\" target=\"_blank\">Astronomy Day<\/a>\u00a0is a world-wide event observed each spring and fall.\u00a0The\u00a0lunar\u00a0influence on the schedule means that the events happen on a different date each year, rather than set calendar dates.<\/li><li><strong>National Donate for All Day<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 a day declared by our friends at Banned4Life, an organization dedicated to ending discriminatory regulations preventing gay males from donating blood.\u00a0\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/banned4life.org\/about\" target=\"_blank\">On this day<\/a>, we ask those who are able to donate to give on behalf of those who cannot.<\/li><li><strong>Mole Day<\/strong>\u00a0-You guessed it \u2013 Celebrated on October 23, 6:02 a.m. \u2013 6:02 p.m., Mole Day commemorates Avogadro\u2019s Number (6.02 x 10<sup>23<\/sup>), which is a basic measuring unit in chemistry.\u00a0 Learn More:\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moleday.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">MoleDay.org<\/a><\/li><li><strong>Make a Difference Day<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 On the fourth Saturday in October people come together with a single purpose: to improve the lives of others.\u00a0 Join the Points of Light Foundation and other sponsors in promoting the importance of recognizing our own power to make the world a better place \u2013 and put our power into action.
